    What is HCG?

    HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone that is naturally produced by pregnant women. When a woman is pregnant, the developing embryo needs access to mom's fat stores in order to grow. HCG allows the embryo to draw fat from those stores whenever it is needed.

    So how does the protocol work for those of us who aren’t pregnant?

    What Dr. A.T.W. Simeons' studies showed in the 1950s was that combining a specific food plan with HCG instructs the hypothalamus to release and mobilise the abnormal stored fat (not vital structural fat) to provide the remaining daily calories that you need to run your body efficiently. As a result, those fat calories in your bloodstream provide the fuel your body needs and prevents hunger pangs.

    This is very different from just drastically restricting calories. Low-calorie diets may be a fast way to lose weight in the beginning, but they are unsustainable and unhealthy. When the body is deprived of the calories necessary to meet its daily needs, it will naturally take its energy from muscle tissue, instead of fat. The result is an increasingly high body fat percentage and a decrease in muscle mass. But, as Dr. Simeons' studies showed, when HCG is introduced, instead of consuming muscle mass when it needs more energy, the body burns excess fat while the muscle tissue remains intact.

    What Are Homeopathic HCG Drops and Tablets?

    There are several delivery methods of HCG to the body. Some people choose daily injections, if they can afford R 5000 to R 10 000 for a six-week treatment. Prescription HCG also comes in nasal spray and transdermal gel, which are also very costly.

    The most common delivery method is homeopathic HCG drops or tablets. Not only are they affordable, they are convenient and have a long shelf life.     In the 1940s and 50's, Dr. Simeons studied the effects of HCG on weight loss. After years of research on thousands of patients, he confirmed his theory that HCG works with the hypothalamus, which regulates key functions of the body, to release stored fat. He published the results in his book, "Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity."

    Dr. Simeons found that HCG is most effective, and results in lasting weight loss, when a specific protocol is followed. This includes daily weight tracking and a very specific food plan. He performed years of studies to pinpoint the foods that work with the protocol to provide the nutrition and chemical reactions in the body that result in daily fat release. These foods, along with the plan’s guidelines, make up the HCG Protocol.
     

    The Protocol Timeline

    The protocol begins with two days of fat-loading, or more specifically, stocking the cells with fat to help prevent hunger when calories are reduced.

    Following the load days are 20 to 40 days (depending on your plan) of very low calorie diet (VLCD), which allows a daily intake of 500 calories. That may not sound like much, but that's added to the large number of calories in nutrition-dense fat that your body is getting as stored fat is released.

    The last three days are also VLCD days, but without HCG drops or tablets. This is the time it takes for the hCG product to leave the body, allowing safe consumption of the increased number of calories needed for Maintenance.

    Maintenance (three weeks) is critical to long-term maintenance of your new weight, and no starch or sugar is allowed.

    This is followed by Life (three weeks), which is a gradual reintroduction of starches and sugars. After these six weeks of maintenance, when you are ready for additional weight loss you can start the Protocol again from the beginning.
